The Last of Options Definitions

Aug 11, 2023

Hey there, survivor! So, you've survived the second article, where we hope we broke down the article sufficiently for you to understand (any further breakdowns would cause us to have a breakdown instead) in the post-apocalyptic world of options. Maybe even outsmarted a few 'Clickers' on your path.

We decided to use one of our favorite games, The Last Of Us (TLOU) to break down the next set of definitions which are extremely for you to take note of… else you'd be the next Clicker.

Ready for the next level in our infected-free, not-so-clicker-proof trek through the land of options?

Exercising: Not the Stealth Kind!

In the world of options, 'exercising' isn't about sneaking past Clickers.

Instead, it’s choosing to wield (or not) the power granted by your option.

It's like deciding whether to use that precious Molotov cocktail or save it for later.

  1. Call Option Exercise: This is where you opt to grab that weapon (or asset) at its current trade value.

  2. Put Option Exercise: Alternatively, it might be time to stash away that Molotov for a better trade.

Timing is Everything: Option Expiry

Just like the tense moments waiting for a Clicker to pass, every option has its "critical moment".

Each option expires, signaling your "now or never" decision time.

But hey, like deciding when to save Ellie from danger, you get to choose your timing.

Some skilled survivors choose to bail early, predicting incoming storms (or economic shifts).

Moolah Matters: Intrinsic Value & Premiums

In the desolate world of TLOU, two things determine an item's worth:

  1. Intrinsic Value: It’s the item's current value in this world. Got a rare ammo clip that’s worth 10 ration cards? That’s its intrinsic value. Basically, what it means that in other situations, your ammo clip might only be worth 5 ration cards. But because your ammo clip is rare and hard to find, it is now worth 10 ration cards. However, if the ammo clip becomes more common and everybody has it, the value would drop and there is no more 'intrinsic value'

  2. Premium: This is like the bargaining chip, the added cost or benefit of making that deal now.
Combine the intrinsic value + Premium, and you've got your deal. Trading in the apocalypse sure is fun!

Breaking Down the Chains: Option Chains Explained

No, it's not a weapon upgrade. An option chain is your survival inventory for trading, showing all choices available.

Being able to decode it? It's like knowing how to craft the perfect weapon.

Conclusion

Each stage in the options wasteland brings you closer to being the ultimate survivor! And hey, remember Joel's wisdom: every expert once knew nothing. So, keep scavenging, keep trading, and chuckle at the Clickers from a safe distance.

Until next, stay alive out there!
